Sandy, I too just learned of Mike’s death and I am so sorry for your loss. As it began to filter through Mike’s former co-workers, those part of the Glendale Police community, the sentiment I heard was, “what a loss.” As Captain Angermann pointed out, it is unfortunate that it takes the death of someone before you share the impact they had on your life but I want to share the impact Mike had on mine. When I was first hired by Glendale, Mike was not my FTO. I later learned it was for good reason, but initially I couldn’t figure out why. Surely someone with Mike’s wealth of knowledge and experience on the street made him the ideal trainer. It was only after I was out of FTO that it became clear. You see, FTO’s are required to train the rookie “by the book,” insure they meet a pre-determined standards, counsel on verbal skills, kick back poorly written reports and all those mundane duties required to be a cop in Glendale in 1993. It was only after I was out of FTO program when Mike’s training program took over. He made sure I knew to keep my head on a swivel. On more than one occasions he kept me from getting my clock cleaned at Jimmy’s on South Birch, and when a guy at 615 South Forest had a knife and was threatening his neighbor, it was Mike who was in the lead and used his flashlight to knock the knife away. Mike was not afraid to take action, resolve the issue, and move on. Mike made it clear that he always had your back but also made it clear to keep him off the witness list. Mike wasn’t going to write a supplement or offense report and he didn’t have time for Judge Dill and “Mickey Mouse” municipal court. His words, not mine. It wasn’t all work. Mike taught me how to play Liars Poker at Mister Donut and in true form, Mike also taught me proper disposal of a confiscated 12 pack from a car load of kids at Celebrity Sports Center. Let me just say proper disposal had little to do with an evidence tag and more about choir practice. I saw Mike a lot when you guys lived in SE Denver. You guys lived on Akron and I on Boston. Mike would drive by with a glass of ice-tea in one hand a cigarette in the other. Sandy, please know Mike had an impact on my career and probably without knowing it, he taught me to survive. God bless.

Sandy, i just heard about Mike's passing today. I am so sorry to hear about this after all the things Mike and you went through during his life. I have lost touch with Mike over the years, and I am sorry it takes something like this to get us back in touch. I was always fond of Mike. He has a king size personality when he wanted to show it, and he could be fun to be around. Please accept Dolly and my deepest condolences. I would appreciate if you would send me your phone number to my email (wfa4th@hotmail.com) so I could call you and catch up on the last few years of Mike's life. God bless you in your time of grief.
