Barbara Lee McKinney, 76, of Parker, CO passed away on October 24, 2023 at Advent Health Hospital in Parker.
She was born on July 28, 1947 to Ernest and Augusta Heiney in St. Louis, MO where she spent her early years developing a strong sense of independence and fun. The family moved to the Denver area when Barb was 7 and despite living in a few other states, she always returned to Denver.
Barb met her husband, Dan McKinney, at Mt. Carmel High School and they enjoyed 57 wonderful years of marriage. They had two daughters, Nikki McKinney Conley, mother of grandson Zane Conley. Leandra McKinney Penley, son-in-law Zack Penley, parents of granddaughter Morgan Penley. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She is also survived by her mother, Gussie (97), sister, Paulie DeFiore, great niece, Kendra DeFiore and many McKinney sisters & brother-in-law, nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all.
Barb was an amazing wife and mother and always made her family the priority. A lot of family time was spent camping at their property, Lil Bit, in Fremont County. The family also enjoyed ATV riding and going to the lake, not to mention game nights. Despite having very busy jobs there was always a home-cooked meal and room for more people at the table. Back in the day she also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, bowling and golfing. As her physical limitations increased she developed a love of MahJong and was learning to play cribbage.
She spent many years after high school as an LPN before moving into banking, managing doctors’ offices and working as a marketing assistant. Throughout her life she was known for her big heart, generous spirit and listening ear. She brought smiles and laughter to everyone she knew.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, November 8 at Ave Maria Catholic Church where friends and family can come honor and celebrate her life. The rosary will be at 10:30, the mass at 11, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the
