Mildred Weir Speer Obituary

Mildred Elizabeth Rhoads was born October 02, 1925 in Farmington, NM to B.J. and Mary (Foster) Rhoads. She was the 4th of 4 siblings. She was born in a house on Behrend Street. Her early life was spent at this house and an oil/gas camp house in Rattlesnake, NM. She is survived by her brother: Benjamin Judson Rhoads. Millie married R.L. (Buddy) Weir in 1946. He worked for El Paso Natural Gas Company and she taught in the school systems. Buddy preceded her in death in 1981. They had three children and she is survived by these three children: Son David J. Weir and his wife Cassie, daughter Karen Ann Glennon and her husband Michael and son Gordon R. Weir and his wife Diana, step daughter Gwen Clouthier, step daughter Jan Munyon and husband Larry. She has 3 grandchildren: Daniel Judson Weir and his wife Lynn, Elizabeth Weir Becker, Amanda Glennon Alvarez and her husband Carlos and 7 step grandchildren: Zachary B. Glennon, Melony Erin Franchini, Amanda Shuree Franchini, Scott Clouthier and his wife Charlotte, David Clouthier and his wife Mary, Dean Munyon and his wife Amy, Kyle Munyon and his wife Stacie. Her great grandchildren are: Matt, Abby and TJ Weir, Cassandra McLaren, Ella Becker, Xander Alvarez, Kobe and Kyla Clouthier, Trevor and Corey Clouthier, Cade, Harper, Raleigh and Declan Munyon, Jackson and Grayson Munyon. Millie attended elementary, junior high and part of high school in Farmington. She graduated from high school in 1943 from Artesia, NM. Her college education was gained at Eastern New Mexico University where she received her BA in Education in 1959 and her Master’s in Education in 1963. Millie spent 30 ½ years helping the youth of San Juan County. She taught first grade for a year and fourth grade for four years in Bloomfield, NM. She taught second and fourth grades at Northeast Elementary. She taught second and fourth grade at Country Club elementary. She served as Assistant Principal at Swinburne and McKinley elementary schools. She was inducted into the Farmington Education Hall of Fame in 1989. Millie states “Every child can learn” and she loved helping them do so. Millie married L.O. Speer in 1989. L.O. preceded her in death. They met due to their love of golf and shared many wonderful years together. Millie was very active in the First Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder. The professional organizations she participated in were Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Farmington Education Association, NEA-HNM, NEA, PTA and San Juan Association of Retired Educators. In the community she was very active in PEO and Community Concerts. Millie enjoyed outdoor activities. She enjoyed cross country skiing, but her favorite was playing golf. She belonged to the San Juan Country Club where she played numerous tournaments with the Woman’s Golf Association. She traveled to numerous international countries and proudly documented these travels in numerous photo albums. Most of all she loved children. She mostly enjoyed being around all of her children helping with their education and attending their activities. Millie (Mom) will be missed. Millie passed away September 11, 2018. A memorial service will begin at 1:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church at 865 N Dustin in Farmington, NM, 87401. The family will have a private burial prior. In lieu of flowers Millie would appreciate donations be made in her memory to the San Juan College Foundation and/or The First Presbyterian Church Endowment.
