Delma Bigay Ellis Obituary

Delma Bigay Ellis died Thursday morning, January 17, 2019 at her home in Parker, Colorado with Lyle Ellis, her life partner of 35 years, at her side.  She was 69 years young.  Delma was born in Artesia, New Mexico to Manuela and Delfin Carrasco on June 21, 1949.  She grew up in West Texas near Big Bend State Park and graduated in the class of 1968 from Kermit High School in Kermit, Texas with fond memories of her time as a pom pom girl, and of her adventures with her best friend, Connie Martinez.  She married Alfredo "Freddy" Martinez and had one child, a daughter that she named Regina after her own grandmother.  Shortly after her daughter was born, Delma separated from her husband and moved to Colorado where she began a career in insurance, making her way from telephone operator to senior underwriter, and eventually to vice president.  She lived in Franktown, Colorado for several years with her second husband, Larry Bigay.  Ultimately, she made Parker her home with her current husband Lyle.
Delma had many joys and interests over the years. Some of her favorite things were: eating her mother's New Mexico style stacked red chili enchiladas and pumpkin empanadas; driving her Volvo; shopping in Loehmann's Backroom for bargains; numerology; long conversations with her family and friends; scouring garage sales, antique and thrift stores generally, but hunting for Denby pottery and cowboy themed Christmas ornaments in particular; studying religious philosophies and worldviews (both mainstream and alternative); caring for beloved pets; watching old westerns, "The Sound of Music" and murder mysteries; making holiday meals with her mother and Lyle at her mother's house in Brush, Colorado; listening to Rod Stewart, ABBA and Jimmy Buffet; taking the scenic drive to Deckers, Colorado; hiking in Espanola, New Mexico, especially Bandelier National Monument; and traveling to Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Delma is survived by her husband, Lyle Ellis, of Parker, Colorado; her daughter, Regina Bigay, of San Francisco, California; her stepson, Daniel Ellis, of Dyer, Indiana; her stepson, Keith Ellis, of Westminster, Colorado; her stepdaughter, Elaina Ellis, of Denver, Colorado; her stepgrandson, Cody Teel, of Denver, Colorado; her mother, Manuela Carrasco, of Santa Teresa, New Mexico; her sister, Yolanda Luebker, of Santa Teresa, New Mexico; her brother, Del Carrasco and his wife Mary, of Santa Teresa, New Mexico; her nephew, Andrew Luebker, of Santa Teresa, New Mexico; and her nephew, Michael Carrasco and his wife Michele, of Gardendale, Texas.  She is predeceased by her sister, Irene Aarseth and her husband Carl; James Luebker, her brother-in-law; and her father, Delfin Carrasco.
The family plans to hold a celebration of life dinner in Delma's honor later this year.
